Information about the country

With an area of 2,780,400 sq kilometer Argentina is the eight largest country in the world and the second largest country in South America. It is eight times larger than Germany. 38,3m people are living in Argentina, i.e. the population density is not very high.
But about 12m people are living in the area of Buenos Aires. The average population is 14 inhabitants per sq kilometer, in Buenos Aires it is 13,800 inhabitants per sq kilometer. In comparison to that Germany has 228 inhabitants per sq kilometer.
Even though Argentina has large natural resources and fruitful land available, it belongs to the internationally deep in debt nations. The depression in 2001/2002 resulting in a decoupling of the Peso from the Dollar turned out to be a big disaster for the country. As a result of the collapsed economics, Argentina is facing a large unemployment. As a consequence of that, 40% of the population is living below the official poverty level (USD 50 per month), every fourth inhabitant belongs (with USD 20 per month) to the extremely poor part of the population.
Another issue is the social structure of the country. The spread between rich and poor people is huge, e.g. currently, the 10% richest people earn over 28 times more money than the 10% of the poor people.
