Information about the country
Tanzania is a relatively young African state, formed by the integration of Tanganijka and Zansibar. Tanzania has an area of 945,000 sq kilometers and has 37M inhabitants corresponding to 39 inhabitants per sq kilometer. That means, Tanzania has a low population density.
Not only that Tanzania is a young state, also its population is very young. The average age is 17.7 years; the anticipated average life of females is 46.3 and 44.9 for males. About a fifth of the population cannot read or write; the illiteracy rate is at 9.5%. The spread of AIDS is alarming; out of 1000 inhabitants, 46.7 are infected with the virus. 36% of the population lives below the official poverty level, i.e. they have to live with less than 1 USD per day.
Tanzania belongs to the poorest countries in the world. In addition, it is facing the issues of AIDS and Malaria. Officially, there are 2M orphans registered in Tanzania at the moment; but it is hard to say what the real figure is. Due to these reasons we decided to support projects for orphans in Tanzania and find sponsorships.
